Is It Always About Being Politically Correct?

We all seem to disagree on something. All of us have different views on almost everything, so agreeing to disagree is something we need to talk about. But in order to do so, mutual respect is needed. Conversation is needing. And most of all, understanding is crucial.

And yet, all of us are driven by different motivations. We are guided by our values and some ideology close to our hearts. In the center of it all, we have politics and politicians, and we have to somehow trust our governments as a matter of necessity.

Most government policies require that our dreams and aspirations reflect what the electorate expect, and for democratic societies like what we have, we all wanted to defend freedom. Freedom is as sacred as religion, and we go to confrontation with other sovereign countries in order to protect it. When freedom is curtailed, we treat it as a desecration of our person.

Our collective aspirations determine our national pride, but above it all is our national interests. For other societies, the same is true. Our national interests might be contrary to their dreams and aspirations, and they might also feel desecrated because of it.

One lesson we learned from the second world war is it is not enough to be politically correct. Taking no sides when people are being murdered is close to futile. States are composed of people. The government emanates from the people. The core of government existence is to protect the people, and we need to defend people from extreme injustice. We can't just watch people being murdered. We must act with decisiveness.

Because in the end, it is better to be loving than being right.
