Op-Ed: Is Politics Enough?

We have seen many people coming to the streets demanding more rights from the political establishment, including the right to directly electing their leaders, and being granted human rights in the judicial system, among many calls for traditional democratic values.

Such is the case of Hong Kong, and we have seen many protests demanding these rights from China. But these protests have turned into violent riots that led to paralyzed transportation system, disruption of tourism, and even affected local businesses.

So the question remains: Is politics enough? It is true that justice is one of the crucial elements of the human condition, and all of us are entitled to our life, property, and liberty without due process of law. But justice is a two way street. Human rights is a two way street. This is not just an exclusive situation of Hong Kong, but speaks universally.

Mutual respect is wanting. Common rights must be observed. And peaceful assembly is the right way to do it. Democracy is a responsibility, after all. The extradition bill that started these protests have been withdrawn as well.

In the end, China's sovereignty over Hong Kong is being tested in its "one country, two systems" promise when Hong Kong returned to the mainland in 1997, and the world expects China to be responsible in upholding it.
