Technology, Democracy, and the Rest

A lot has been said on this pandamic that totally changed how we conduct our daily lives. There are a lot of people dead, and more people are infected everyday. Leaders are starting the blame game, and begin holding accountable those who are responsible for mishandling this outbreak.

Media reports show how fast the coronavirus spread. For a while, everybody is watching how the World Health Organization will contain its infections. As death toll rises, a lot of people may ask and wonder how these numbers are possible given the science and technology that we have today. If they have contained the Ebola virus, then why have they failed in managing the coronavirus?

The news came shocking early on, as health officials begin to advise people on how to avoid contracting the disease. People are locked up in their homes with no promise of safety. Everybody is affected by an unusual set up of work from home. It seems that technology has betrayed us all, and we are reeling backwards when people are helpless against the plague that can be found in the horrors of history books.

Now, in the Philippines, the government has decided to shut down its biggest media platform by denying its legislative franchise to continue its broadcast. In this critical time when the people require information on the on-going pandamic and its dangers, the government has been criticized in its move.

Legitimate media sources also cry out against misinformation that disseminate mainly on social media. It has been condemned numerous times as it adds up to the worries of the unsuspecting public taking in fake news on face value.

The move to close media companies have been seen as an attack against democracy, and an assault to free speech. Numerous groups and schools have joined the call to condemn this latest move in a series of government crackdown against the press.

But above the rest, life goes on. The world awaits to flatten the curve. And as we slowly open to face the world once again, it will greet us with the same energy before this pandamic. Scientists will soon go on to do their job, the workforce will report to duty, and the politicians will go back politicking.
