The Unseen Slavery

A lot of us subscribe to the best notion of freedoms afforded to us by law, whether it is at work, at play, at school, or even on how we prefer our steaks to be prepared. Freedom is an abstract concept, a condition that is severally defined in the minds of the population, with education as the discriminating agent.

In order to be free, there has to be a power of choice and the person doing it has to do it on his own freewill, without anybody coercing him and the circumstances must afford him to do so. It is in this manner that most people associate liberty with freedom from poverty.

Independence is a concept held in such high esteem, so that it is imbued with sanctity that no one shall desecrate. In most historical context, independence was sought because of abuses in authority, which resulted to oppression in society, whether it is in certain respect or in all social classes.

When the people loses their own dignity to pursue their own happiness, or when their properties are endangered by authority which threatens their freedom of choice, this discontent may cause disruption in society of many countries that mostly ended in successful revolutions.

A lot of things are associated with this concept, and mostly it is applied to the political arena where independence is equated to electoral participation, and expressing a person's views on politicians. Politicking, for some, is a source of entertainment, and we have every right to binge watch CNN.

The unseen slavery nowadays relate not on political maneuverings, although it is a valid conduit of discourse, but on our philosophical thoughts. Our minds can either liberate us or imprison us. The many infamous dictators in history has been known to manipulate their people by altering their thoughts through venomous propaganda wrapped in convincing, delicious sweetness.

A revolution needs to be unleashed in this modern day, not against invaders or colonizers, but against these thoughts that poison our actions. It deliberately weakens our values, plunder our morals, and, then, ultimately plunge us into a deep, cruel poverty that we never expected to happen.

The time to act is now.
